As the founding leader of the Horseshoe Bend Community Group, I am constantly inspired by the passion and dedication of our volunteers, who share a love for gardening, nature, and community connection. Horseshoe Bend Animal Farm was once a special place where I took my children, and like many in the community, I was saddened by its closure and decline. When the opportunity arose to restore the space, I felt that this was a worthwhile project to take on. I spend much of my time advocating for our group and its mission, to ensure we create a welcoming, sustainable community space. It is incredibly rewarding to see growing support from various funding bodies, Brimbank City Council, Parks Victoria rangers, and local businesses, all working together to help us achieve our vision.
I've lived in Keilor my whole life, with fond memories of Horseshoe Bend from my childhood and now watching my son enjoy it too. I work full- time in finance but love spending my spare time in nature. Through volunteering, I've met people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, learning a lot that I bring back to my own garden.
I was raised by parents who loved gardening. Mum with her flowers and dad with vegetables. A curious child, I watched, learned and asked many questions. The natural world fascinates me. Being amongst it all is like being at home- content and fulfilling. I am forever learning. I am now a full time gardener and soft landscaper, with intentions to keep things as sustainable as possible, upcycling and recycling where possible. I love that at Horseshoe Bend Community Group we get to do all this, meet amazing souls and ofcourse I get to volunteer my time to doing something I love.
I'm Laz, and I have been a volunteer with HSBCG for the last three years. I'm an IT professional who absolutely loves gardening—especially edible gardens! I'm passionate about sustainable practices and applying permaculture principles.
I’ve lived in the area my whole life and was disappointed by the lack of community gardens. So when I saw this initiative come up, I was all in! It’s been amazing to be part of a group that brings people together through gardening, and I’m committed to growing this space for our community. Within the group, I manage the orchard, social media platforms, and the website.
